Color Challenge - Don't Citron Me | Kelly Janes

Hey there, friends! Have you taken part in the Autumn Shimmerz Color Challenge? The color I chose, for this challenge, is Don't Citron Me Coloringz. I find green to be a challenging color and it's definitely not something I naturally gravitate towards, so I knew it would be a great color to choose for the challenge!

I started my 12x12 scrapbook layout by adding a layer of clear gesso to the background. I then used heavy black gesso with a spiderweb stencil to add a bit of detailing to the background. I then took the Don't Citron Me Coloringz and sprayed it directly onto the background. 

Once the green was dry, I sprayed Ruby Spritz and Lil' Yellow Skool Bus Coloringz onto a scrap piece of packaging. I mixed those colors together with a paintbrush to create a deep orange color and then used the packaging technique to add that color to the background in a few different areas. I think it's so fun to add the color to the background using different techniques (packaging technique, using a paintbrush, spraying directly on the background, etc.)! You get a different look with each technique!

I then moved onto embellishing. I grabbed multiple Halloween themed embellishments and 4 photos of my kiddo when he was trick or treating. I had so much fun layering the embellishments on the background! I love how the mixed media background peeks out from behind the photos and embellishments!

Mango Tango Bright Spirits | Julee Tilman

Hi Shimmerz friends! It's Julee Tilman popping in today to share my October color challenge creation. I selected Mango Tango Vibez for the challenge. This is one of those misunderstood colors I think. I've actually put it in my cart at least 7 times, then realized I already owned it, but hadn't used it. As I started playing around with it, I realized where the disconnect was happening. I kept thinking it was a rusty orange (the old website swatch was more orange in color, and mangos are kind of orange right? And hooray for the new website, am I right?). But Mango Tango is actually this gorgeous light red/coral color. Add in the shimmer of Vibez and this is one BEAUTIFUL color!

So I started with the idea of using a stencil with the spray and some paste, but changed gears when I set my stencil down on a page to clean it and fell in love with the resulting ghost print. I jut had to use it, so cut it down to card size and then pounced some Angel Wings Shimmerz randomly around the panel with a stencil brush to create a snowy feel.

I then pulled out the Filled to the Brim stamp set I illustrated and stamped the coffee cup, then watercolored with Mango Tango Vibez and fussy cut.  The sentiment is stamped on a circle die cut, then I layered them together adding in some greenery die cuts from pine cardstock. I pounced on these with more Angel Wings and also flicked some Snow Storm Vibez for a little more texture and depth.

Next I took a newsprint tag from my stash and spritzed with Mango Tango, covered the bottom with a bit of washi tape and then accented with a seam binding bow and a couple jingle bells.

'You Take the Cake' Color Challenge with Process Video by Niki Rowland

Hi everyone, this is Niki here with you today and it's my turn to play along with the October Color Challenge. The DT are each choosing one colour that we haven't used before or that we wouldn't usually choose, and using that colour predominantly on our layouts. You can play along with the Color Challenge over on the Shimmerz Sharez facebook group or on Instagram using the hashtag #shimmerzcolorchallenge.

My chosen colour was 'Steely Blue Eyes' which is an Inklingz. It's a dark rich navy and I haven't used it much before becuase it is so dark. But it's a really lovely colour and I really love the layout I made using it as my predominant colour. There is a process video for this layout that you can view at the end of this post.

I started by creating a packaging technique background. I made this in a vertical design and used Steely Blue eyes to create most of it, I did also add two more colours: Oakie Bear Blue Inklingz and Blue Lagoon Inklingz. These were to give my background a little colour variation. I also added lots of splatters around my background.

I also stamped with Steely Blue Eyes. I painted some of the paint onto some stamps and then stamped onto my background. I found it worked best to stamp some of the colour off the stamp first before stamping it onto the layout. This meant the details of the stamps showed up better. Thick Inklingz paint worked best too - more runny and there would have been more bleeding. I used three different texture stamps on this background, all with the Steely Blue Eyes Inklingz.

I then added naked chipboard circles onto my layout. Once they were stuck in place I painted them with the Steely Blue Eyes too. I find that both chipboard and wood veneer take Shimmerz paints really well and colour beautifully. Also when they are dry you can really see the beautiful shimmer.

I built up my layout with lots of embellishments. I used several things from Vicki Boutin Color Kaleidescope for this layout. I also added some clear stickers, flair and two Dotz by Shimmerz. I then added some wood veneer hearts, and painted those too with Steely Blue Eyes Inklingz.

I also added a title using various alphabet stickers and finished off with some sequins.

Snow Day | Brianna Lepper

Hey y'all!  We've got another fun challenge this month!  The Fall Color Challenge last month was so much fun so we decided to do a Winter Color Challenge this month!  The design team each chose 1 color to use in a Winter themed layout.  We hope that you'll play along with us, we want to see what you create! Don't forget to tag me in your posts so that I can check it out!  For this month, I chose a Vibez in Grey Flannel.  Grey Flannel is a beautiful shimmery grey and was part of the 2018 Fall release.  Here's what I came up with for this month!

In addition to Grey Flannel, I used Inklingz in Naughty Or Nice and Me & Blue with a little bit of Vibez Deep Blue Sea mixed in.  I wanted the additional colors to compliment the pretty Grey Flannel color.

I used an older cut file from the Hip Kit Club and cut it out twice so that I could layer them both on top of each other.

I pulled some die cut pieces from a few different Christmas kits from the Hip Kit Club and made sure that the ones I chose, matched my color scheme.  I love how it turned out and can't wait to see your take on this months Color Challenge!  Check out my process video below and don't forget to put my name in the comments section of your next Shimmerz order and you'll receive a free gift!

"He is a Reader now" Scrapbooking Layout | Simone Schermann

Hi Shimmerz friends, it's Simone again with another 12x12 layout. This month the Shimmerz team chose one color to use on their project and I picked Shimmerz Coffee. I love the hue of this brown, sparkly shimmerz and since I already knew the photo I wanted to document I also knew this color would be a perfect fit. Somehow my project ended up being a layout in colors very suitable for the season but not at all revolving around the typical Fall topics. And I'll tell you that I couldn't be happier about it! It turned out perfectly!

I used various different free cut files from the Paper Issues store and only cut the pieces that I liked most. I resized, turned and cut pieces out of the files. I also placed different patterned papers on my cutting mat - all of this was a first for me and not everything turned out the way I envisioned it. But what I noticed again and again, if you never try you won't find out if you would actually be successful. This was a great start. I cut leaves from white cardstock as well as patterned paper. The white leaves were then colored using the Shimmerz Coffee as well as some other Shimmerz colors but spreading the color onto some packaging an dipping the leaves in the paint. I absolutely love how they turned out. If you have never tried this, I highly recommend the technique. It is very easy and since the color doesn't cover all parts equally you already have a great color variation just like that!

I then layered some paper at the top, placed my photo and created two vines of leaves coming off both sides of the photo. The open space that I created with these branches, I then used for my long title as well as my journaling. Before I added the vines and the title I added paint splatters to the background, it felt very odd to have a plain white background with piles of mixed media leaves and torn paper stacked on top. The splatters made it look messier and therefore it all blended well together.

Autumn Vibes Color Challenge | Amanda Baldwin

Hi Shimmerz Friends!

Amanda here, & I am so excited to be sharing my take on the 

Autumn Vibes October Color Challenge!

My focus color for this month is Vibez Quit Yer Wine-n and oh my heart, this color is divine!!! Absolutely perfect for all your Fall creations!

Rather than rave about how beautiful this color is though,

here's a look at what I created with it.....

So Beautiful! 

I just adore that photograph of my two darlings, and the Vibez Quit Yer Wine-n color was the perfect choice for both celebrating Fall and childhood playfulness! 

I apply Quit Yer Wine-n to the top semi circle of the layout with the packaging technique. This creates a more textural look, and really highlights the berry tones within the Quit Yer Wine-n color. I also splatter this pretty color along the semi circle rim, and then decide to create a much smaller semi circle of splatters at the base of my layout too! 

To compliment Quit Yer Wine-n, I add Vibez Glorious Day and Coloringz Ahoy Matey to the mix.

Gosh, it's pretty!!!

The golden hues in Glorious Day really add that 'extra' to the wine base. So beautiful! 

While that mulberry wine base is gorgeous, I really must stress how different the Quit Yer Wine-n color appears when applied this way. Using the packaging technique really impedes the shimmering sediment in the paint. You'll still see 'shimmer' but  not at the intensity that we're used to. 

You'll spot the difference immediately when you see my title sprayed with Quit Yer Wine-n below....

Oh.WOW!!! 

Now that's Quit Yer Wine-n! 

How incredible is that golden shimmer through that burgundy wine color?!! 

Absolutely sensational!!!

Quit Yer Wine-n is such a beautiful, rich color and certainly looks its absolute best when sprayed onto projects.

My Favorite Season | Ericka Strange

Hello Shimmerz fan! It's Ericka here and I'm playing along with the October Design Team Challenge. For this challenge we had to pick one color to focus on for a fall project. Talk about tough choices but in the end I chose Royal Purple Shimmerz.

I made two fall cards using this gorgeous color along with some complementing Shimmerz colors.

For my first card, I used the Lacey Leafs from Concord & 9th and heat embossed them in gold on Yupo paper.  The Yupo paper isn't as absorbent as watercolor paper and allows you to move the color around longer. I randomly put the Royal Purple and Ultra Marine Shimmerz paint on the leaves and  used some water to move the colors around.

I then used a wet brush on the background and put a light wash of the Royal Purple and Ultra Marine on it along with a little Vibez Glorious Day for some gold shimmer.

For my second card I used the same stamp set with the same colors but on watercolor paper.

I love the different look on the watercolor paper and the shimmer really shows through.  After heat embossing the image in gold, I put the the Shimmerz colors on the leaf, I lightly misted it to give it a softer look. I then used the Royal Purple to give a light wash to the background and a little Glorious Day for some gold shimmer.

Autumn Color Challenge Card | Julee Tilman

Hi Shimmerz friendz! This month, Samantha challenged the team to select one color and create an autumn themed project with that color as the focal point. I recently purchased a pretty wreath for my front door, and thought that I could sort of recreate it on a card with Don't Rain on My Parade Vibez. This color is a beautiful, shimmery, dusty blue that takes my breath away.

To create my wreath, I pulled out the Petite Poppies Stampz set and selected one of the leaf images to create a wreath from. I then stamped in a circular repeated pattern to form a wreath base. I also stamped another slightly larger wreath to tuck behind. Then I stamped the leaf image multiple times and embossed everything with gold embossing powder. I then watercolored with Don't Rain on My Parade and fussy cut the pieces while my boys watched football.

To compose the wreath, I layered all of the pieces around a sentiment circle from my stash. It's a digital design I created, printed on a laser printer and foiled with a minc machine. When I had the wreath shape arranged how I liked, I started with the accent pieces. I embossed one of the petite poppy images in gold and then painted with Don't Rain on My Parade Vibez and Miner, Miner 49er Inklingz. While I was at it, I gave some wood embellishments a coat of Salt of the Earth Paste-eez to prime them, and then painted with Don't Rain on My Parade and Miner, Miner 49er. I used the same colors for a small  paper flower, then tucked everything together and arranged with some berries and gold ball floral picks.

While all the glue was drying on that, I set out to make a cozy background. I used a plaid stencil to sponge the Don't Rain on My Parade Vibez onto cream colored cardstock for the background. Doesn't it look like a cozy blanket? When I'm ink blending with sprays, I like to use mini ink blending foam. The trick is to dab your foam off on your palette until it's not too watery and then take it to your stencil. If it's too wet, it will seep under the stencil, so start with a little, and you can always layer more color on as needed.

I loved how the background turned out, but decided I wanted a pop of color between the blues for contrast. I wanted a rusty color, but didn't have one in my stash. So I decided to create one with a bit of Scarlett's Fever and Freshly Squeezed Coloringz mixed with  So Sappy Shimmerz. It turned out a beautiful shimmery copper color and was perfect for some die cut leaves. Don't they just shine? I tucked the leaves in behind the wreath to finish off the card.
