Love My Life With You

Hello everyone!

Have you tried out a new color for the Shimmerz Color Challenge this month? I previously chose Shimmerz Coffee since brown is one I rarely use as a focal color. My first layout was a masculine, "nature-y" layout, so for this layout I shifted my focus to a more feminine, floral theme.

I started off by selecting a wood grain patterned paper (Simple Stories Fall Farmhouse) as my base. With a wet brush, make some brushstrokes with white acrylic paint along the center of the layout and then ran over them with my brayer. This techniques gives the mixed media more of a washed out look. I added some extra splatters of white acrylic paint and Coffee (Shimmerz) and Oakie Doakie (Creameez).

The floral clusters were fussy cut out of a patterned paper from Vicki Boutin's Wild Flower and Honey collection. For extra layers and dimension, I made a swatch of Coffee (in brushstrokes) and Brass Knuckles (in splatters) on a scrap piece of kraft cardstock, and punched out some branches. My leaflets were punched out of plain kraft cardstock.

Once I had everything, I placed my base (backed with navy cardstock) on my base and layered in the flowers, leaflets, and branches. Used a mix and match of thickers to make title and popped on some stickable pearls in beige. For a finishing touch, and to marry everything together, I splattered Coffee on the whole layout.

And that's it! Hope you are inspired to make a layout like this and to use those "scary and difficult" colors. Remember, if you write my name in the comments section of your next Shimmerz order, you'll receive some free paint!

Sweet Magic Tea

Did you hear that Shimmerz Siren calling out to you? Yep, that was me, Joyce, calling out to you to share some Sweet Magic Tea today.

I made this canvas for my young niece to hang in her bedroom.  She adores the color of pink and pink tea too.  Ok now, grab a cuppa tea, make yourself comfortable, because I have a long post to share with you today.

·         A pink-a-licious 8 x 10 canvas background with pretty Shimmerz Paint colors of neutrals, pink, and similar colors found in magazine collage work.
·         A faux encaustic look created with Pasteez, Salt of the Earth, dimensional paint on the photograph of the child which rendered this cool milky transparency with an ethereal effect.  This faux encaustic technique is so exciting, and I can’t wait for you to try it too.
·         A Magic Tea Bag

Canvas Background:

1.    After torn collage work was affixed to the canvas using various magazine and textured papers, I mixed up a concoction of Shimmerz Paints Acritonez red and gesso to achieve the desired pink color.
2.    I randomly applied the pink paint softly around the edges of the torn pieces of papers.  Doing this melds the collage papers together so that it almost appears as if all those torn pieces become one.
3.    I repeated the melding process randomly using, Aqua Huez, Cuppa Joe (no longer available at the store), and Inklingz, Penny 4 Your Thoughts.
4.    Both the pink and brown paints were randomly applied to the edge of the canvas along with some Inklingz, Brass Knuckles.
5.    A watered down gesso application was applied all over the canvas to unify the patterns of the papers and paint applications.
6.    When the watered down gesso was dried, I applied thick coats of gesso and white crackle with a spatula to small areas on the canvas.  After those products dried, I lighted sanded the thick coats of gesso and white crackle to smooth the finish.

Faux Encaustic:

The photo of the child reveals an ethereal and milky transparency effect without using the traditional encaustic technique of hot melted wax.  I have to admit that I prefer the results from Pasteez on a photo better than the real encaustic technique, because I can control how much of the milky appearance I want by limiting the number of applications of Pasteez without the hassle of melting the was…not to mention the time and clean up entailed using hot melted wax.  The faux encaustic technique was achieved by using Shimmerz  Pasteez Salt of the Earth.

1.     Using an ink jet printer, print photo on regular printer paper and let the ink dry thoroughly.

2.    Apply a few thin coats of Shimmerz  Pasteez on top of the ink-jet printed photo.  Let each coat dry naturally before applying the next coat of product.  Do not use a heat gun as it will render a bumpy appearance.

3.    The ink printed on regular printer paper does not bleed with this Shimmerz product.  How cool is that?!  Think of the possibilities using this technique on some vintage pictures in your art work too!

4.    After the product dried, I cut and glued the photo on top of cardstock and placed it on my canvas so that I could tuck in some layered embellishments.

Magic Tea:

1.    Remove staple from tea bag and empty the contents of a tea bag (I have used Yogi tea bags because they have some sweet affirmations printed on their tea tags).  Note:  I have cut the tea bag down to my desired size to fit in with the scale of the composition.

2.    Insert some micro beads, glitter at the bottom of the tea bag and insert ethereal milky image as instructed under Faux Encaustic above.

3.    Lightly apply a mat gel medium over the tea bag with the inserted photo and micro beads.  This binds everything together.

Bottle of Potion: Some Bed of Roses Spritz, clear glue, and beads were poured into the potion bottle.

Tea Spoon: Gesso a small plastic cocktail spoon, mix Acritonez Red and Tuttie Fruitti Dimensional paint (to look like frosting in the bed of the spoon), add micro beads for sprinkles.

I hope I have inspired you to use Shimmerz Paint products outside of the norm and create your own Sweet Magic.

Gypsy Soul

Did you hear that gypsy Shimmerz Siren call out to you?
Yep, that was me, Joyce.
I’m going to show you how to apply some gypsy/bohemian style
to your art today using Shimmerz Paints.

I have been enchanted by Gypsy genre and bohemian art styles lately,
so I thought I’d take those  feelings and put them on paper.
I adored the movement in the girls dance!
And, I thought I could create such movement with some art products.

  • Applications of stencil and Shimmerz Texturez Tidy Widy were applied over various areas on the 9 x 12 watercolor paper.
  • Then a heat gun was applied over the textured product and allowed to rise, bubble and burst which rendered a lacy look.
  • On top of the stenciled work, drops of Shimmerz Paint colors were applied, and I quickly added drops of water over the paint colored drops.  After this application, I allowed the color to dry completely before apply several other colors using the same technique.
  • Once all the colors of paint dried thoroughly, I applied a white art pen over the raised stencil work to make it look like a lacy appearance.

And what’s a gypsy girl without her baubles and chains?
  • Some Inglingz Brass Knuckles was applied over the chipboard chains and then some white art pen markings were added to each bead in the chain.
  • I gently swiped some Shimmerz Celery over the chain.
  • Some gesso and Shimmerz Key Lime were lightly applied over the metal flower charms.

 Shimmerz Products:
Spritz – Chance of Rain, 4 Leaf Clover, Plum Pudding
Vibez – Plum Tuckered Out, Blushing Bride
Shimmerz – Celery, Berry-licious, Orchid-stra, Key lime
Inkglingz- Brass Knuckles
Texturez – Tidy Widy

We are all a little broken....and that's okay.

Did you hear that Shimmerz Siren?  Yep, that was me Joyce.  Glad you found your way here to let me share some heart-stuff with you today.

You wouldn’t think that pages this size would include so many Shimmerz products….but they did.
And, I was only too happy to work and include them in my art journal entry entitled, “We’re all a Little Broken.”  One of my favorite things to do when working in old thrift shop books is to create my own backgrounds.

The following Shimmerz products were used to age the book pages and work with the colors in the photo:

Shimmeringz- Heavy Metal
Vibez – Blushing Bride
Sptriz - Treasured Hymm

The broken heart chipboard above was created with the new Acritonez self-priming acrylic paint. After applying gesso on top of the chipboard, add light molding paste over a small pattern stencil and allow the product to dry. Then apply the Acritonez – Roses are Red paint on top of the chipboard and molding paste.  Then spritz on some Vibex- Blushing Bride to add some depth in the color. Using a small paint brush add Inklingz- Brass Knuckles, and Inklingz- I Love You Onyxly around the raised molding paste patterns to make the molding paste pattern stand out. Some rich Blingz – Gold Glimmer was lightly added around the circumference of the broken heart.

And finally, I used another new product, Paste-eez dimensional paint. Above, this paint was spread over a small heart stencil. When the product dried, I shaded the three little dimensional hearts with Inklingz- I Love You Onyxly and a very small paint brush to make them stand out gloriously.

I hope I have inspired you to visit your local thrift shop and re-purpose an old book using the gorgeous Shimmerz paint line.

Products:
Acritonez – Roses are Red
Paste-eez –The “Cream” Team
Shimmeringz- Heavy Metal
Vibez – Blushing Bride
Spritz – Treasured Hymm
Blingz – Gold Glimmer
Inklingz- I Love You Onyxly
Inklingz – Brass Knuckles
Inklingz – Miner, Miner 49er

My next Shimmerz Siren call will be on February 26th. Come and let me inspire you with more ways to use Shimmerz Store products.
